Well it was easy to create a Google account and then have a look at Google docs but I’m not sure if I will become a regular user for the foreseeable future as I have easy access to Office at work and home but I suppose that is the point of the excercise to make us aware of what is out there.
My Space and Facebook
Both not available at school but spent some time at home accessing and joining both Facebook and Myspace. Can see why it appeals to so many. Had fun seaching for old school mates and my sons!! Thankfully I could’nt find them because of their names are shared by so many! Because Govenment schools are unable to access both MySpace and Facebook could’nt find other Australian schools or libraries except for Yarra Plenty that use them. Looked at some of the American Libraries and can see the appeal to younger readers as an access point. Will keep looking to see if any non governemt Australian schools are using MySpace.
RSS Feeds
Had good look at both Boglines and Google but decided to use Boglines as their instructions where clear and easy to use, even I could’nt go wrong. It was easy to access other blogs and to subscribe to them but the amount of infomation out there is so overwhelming. I wonder how do we access the best of information when there are 1000’s of blogs and podcasts ? Networking with other Teacher/Librarians and using SLAV best solution? Also considering how best to use RSS Feeds and Blogs in the Library Information service?
Library thing
Will have to come back to this one as the site was down last night.
Online Image Generators.
Well this was fun. Found a site that you can make your own magazine covers and so I did. Have been asked to demonstrate this to an English class early next week so I’m putting my learning to good use and doing lots of discussing about how some of these sites can be used in the classroom. Very impowering.
Use of Flickr in the classroom
Now that I know about Flickr I have been able to work with another teacher and upload student photos onto Flickr from an excursion of historical sites that the students completed just the other day. Also can see lots of potential for students to publish entries for Wikapedia for local history. Lots of potential there.
Flickr Week 2
Running badly behind schedule but have managed to create an account with Yahoo and then into Flickr. Found lots of great photos and could see the value of students accessing and loading classwork to share. Problem posting an image to my blog but finally managed. This school has access to Flickr which I know other schools have had problems with. Still feel I need a lot more time to synthise all the information
Learning with Web 2.0
Went to a great conference yesterday on Web 2.0 applications and implications which helped to put everything into perspective and emphasised how important it was for teachers to get on board with this new technology and use it in our classrooms. Will Richardson’s presentation was excellent and I bought his book “Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts” as well. Easy to read and to follow so I feel not quite as overwhelmed as before.
First Attempt !
Hi, I’m a Teacher/Librarian in a small rural school with very little technical support. To do this great program being offered and to give me encouragement and assistance I have roped in other keen teachers to also participate. We are making a slow start but are determined to complete but with 3 of us working together we are getting good at problem solving! Regarding the title of my blog hoping to do a little travelling within the next 2 years especially South America, so looking for tips and good spots to see and stay. Heading to Chile and Argentina first.
