Conclusion

Found the experience fascinating , challenging, eye opening but feel that I have only brushed the surface. Will speak to a group of teacher/librarians to best see how to use our new knowledge to deliver better services to our students. Have been involved in the inservicing of staff in areas that they are interested. Now read the Green Guide Tech section with new eyes and given more time will revisit some of the modules that I feel I skimmed. Thanks for the opportunity and I now feel confident in having” a go” at other Web 2.0 applications that are out there.

Second Life

Am aware of second life and how people interact but had know idea that libraries and universities where buying space in the virtual world and seeing new ways to reach students. Not applicable to small school lib. yet but who knows?

Podcasts and videos

Successfully subscribed to a variety of podcasts using bloglines. Such a great aray of educational podcasts and videos out there!. Easy to store on a laptop and display on an electronic whiteboard for class. Heaps of potential. Science and Humanity Teachers I spoke to have used these tools in the classroom

Rollyo

Checked Rollyo out and created a search and obtained a list of suitable websites then went to tools to post it so my Blog without success. Not sure what went wrong but will try again. Found the concept useful but as it does’nt update with new resources one needs to be aware that the list could date.  Maybe able to use it in the library setting for library assignments/topics etc.

Wikis

Probably the most useful tool in the range of Web.20 material looked at so far. Can see lots of applications especially in a small school lacking IT help. Have worked with another teacher in a Year 11 class for students to create their own Wikis relating to an English Topic. Looked at other school libraries to see how they where being used for a variety of purposes such as book reviews, pathfinders etc. This is an area I will definately hace a go at.

Library 2.0

I think that Libraries have always been responsive to the needs of their users and Web 2.0 is another much more sophisticated way to tend to user needs. Allowing the Library user to participate in and provide feedback is an important step in the dissemination of information and knowledge. Librarians will be able to interact with library users through blogs and wikis. It is even more important now because of this growth that we continue to teach and emphasise critical thinking in our students.

Social Bookmarking (del.icio.us)

Well, back into it after many interruptions and promises to catchup over the break. Could’nt quite understand the point of del.icio.us till I registered and followed the instructions. WOW! Easy to manage and install and to have a mobile list of bookmarks. Liked the tag section where one could add notes too for easy reference. Will be making regular use of this new tool.

Google Book Search

I and some of my students had fun searching for some of our favourite reads and locating where we could buy the books or borrow from the nearest library. Students thought it would be a useful link to put on the School Library page. Finding extracts for various books was also very useful and could be a great way to encourage student to help select material. Overall an easy and fun site to use for both staff and students

Google maps.

Have been accessing Google Maps for awhile now. Students love using Google maps and Humanities teachers have been using them as a resoure for some time. Found our property easily but thank goodness the program unable to give a close up view because of where we live.(Distance). Also had a look at the RACV map pages and microsoft. RACV provided a very detailed map of our property with all the little tracks given as roads! Found Google maps very easy to use and had success with each business I looked for.
